Conclusion and Analysis of the Week
The report shows that all over the country, 574 people have been killed and injured (367 of them were killed and 207 wounded) from 23 – 29 August 2019.
Overall, the casualties’ toll of the warring parties has increased this week again compared to the previous two weeks; however, civilians casualties have dropped noticeably.
55 Afghan soldiers were killed in the past two weeks, but this week the death toll has risen twice as much as the previous weeks, and 104 pro-government forces were killed. 145 armed militants were killed in the past two weeks, but this week, the level shows a significant increase, as 232 militants have been killed in different parts of the country. But in the past two weeks, the civilian casualties were 148, yet this week the number has dropped to 29. Civilians were still killed and wounded in night operations, explosions and armed clashes.
Reports of casualties all over the past few months indicate that violence on the battlefield by Taliban and the Afghan government has increased, causing civilian casualties. This change in the battlefield has been largely linked to the peace talks between the US and the Taliban in Qatar. The Afghan government has again increased its operations and attacks to impose pressure on Taliban for its pivotal role in the peace negotiations, which creates further obstacles in the way of creating an atmosphere of trust for peace.
Given the bloody situation of war in the country, QASED Strategic Research Center urges both sides of the ongoing war, to reduce the violence on the battlefield in order to create a positive atmosphere for peace and intra-Afghans negotiations and trust building between the two sides. Especially pay close attention to the lives of civilians.
