Conclusion and Analysis of the Week

The report shows that all over the country, 1272 people have been killed and injured (624 of them were killed and 648 wounded) from 30 August – 5 September 2019.

This week a significant increase was seen in casualties of all involved parties and civilians. Last week, 104 Afghan soldiers were killed, but this week the death toll has increased by twice as much as last week to reach 210 killed Afghan soldiers. Last week, 232 armed militants were killed, however, this week’s report shows a significant increase to reach 292 killed militants in different parts of the country. Last week, the number of civilians killed was 29, but again this week, the number has nearly increased four times to be 104 killed civilians. Civilians are still killed and injured by heavy blasts, night raids and airstrikes, and face-to-face combats.

This week has been very bloody for both sides of the ongoing war and the Afghan civilians which shows rising of war casualties over the past few months. There have been several bloody security incidents this week, with several heavy blasts and major incidents of Taliban attacks in urban areas in the northern provinces of the country.

On the other hand, foreign forces casualties were also high this week. 11 foreigners were killed and 25 were injured in three security incidents, 4 of which were confirmed dead by NATO mission forces and the Romanian officials by issuing statements, and the rest confirmed by reliable security sources. Most of the foreign forces casualties were reported as a result of a motor-bomb blast at Green Village Camp, where sources said that eight foreigners were killed and 25 others injured. This is the fourth attack on Green Village camp, which was considered the bloodiest.

This week in Jalalabad city, the killing of four young brothers during a night raid by the Afghan National Security Special Forces (02 unit) triggered a lot of reactions by the public, which forced the head of the NDS to resign. These men have been killed accused of being ISIS fighters. Over the past few months, widespread criticism took place to condemn night operations over unarmed and innocent Afghans causing their death in their homes without a trial. Such incidents occur every week in different parts of the country; however, this is the first time that public showed such reaction which forced the government to take action.

The escalation of violence and security incidents throughout the country comes at a time when the peace deal between the US and the Taliban in Qatar has been finalized and the Afghan government was worried about the deal. In addition, the deadline for Afghanistan’s presidential elections is approaching. These are two factors that are believed to be trying to import pressures from both sides of the war; however, unfortunately, civilian lives are ignored and civilian casualties have increased significantly.

Given the bloody situation of war in the country, QASED Strategic Research Center urges both sides of the war to reduce violence in the battlefield and in particular, to pay serious attention to the lives of civilians.
