Conclusion and Analysis of the Week

The report shows that all over the country, 330 people have been killed and injured (229 of them were killed and 101 wounded) from 20 – 26 December 2019.

The total number of casualties in this week has been higher than it was last week. On the Afghan government’s side, 58 Afghan security forces were killed last week; however, this week the level fell to reach 43 Afghan security forces killed. The death toll for the anti-government armed militants has risen again this week. 122 insurgents were killed last week; however, this week, 153 were killed in different parts of the country. Civilian casualties also showed a higher rate than last week. Last week, the civilian death toll was 27, but this week the number has risen to 32.

This week, civilians were once again killed in attacks initiated by both sides of the war, many civilians were killed, especially in the night raids of Afghan and foreign forces. The civilian casualties due to the ongoing war are high and both sides do not care about civilians life. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in its latest report that more than 100 thousands civilians have been killed and wounded in the conflict in the last decade. Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of  UNAMA said in a press release that the Afghan conflict has no military solution and Afghans should take a serious call for peace.

This week, casualties occurred among US troops in an attack by Taliban. An American soldier was killed and another was injured in a bomb blast in Chardara district of Kunduz province, the death of the American soldier was confirmed by US Defense Department.

Meanwhile, US delegation and Taliban representatives are trying to reach a peace agreement in Qatar. It’s said that both sides have some disagreements over the ceasefire and the issue has delayed the peace agreement. According to some sources, Taliban may only agree to a ceasefire with Americans, and the American side would like to agree to the ceasefire with the Taliban and allow the inclusive ceasefire to be finalized during the intra-Afghan negotiations. The US government is pushing for a peace agreements with the Taliban and is expecting to withdraw several thousand troops.

Qased Strategic Research Center as a war casualties’ monitoring organization in the country emphasizes that the ongoing bloodshed and bloody situation in the country is possible to stop only through the complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and peace with the Taliban. Therefore, we call on international and Afghan stakeholders to focus on peace efforts, rather than focusing on the battlefield.
