National Reconciliation as an Urgent Need of the Current Stage in Afghanistan

A look at Afghanistan’s recent history reveals that Afghans have always failed due to failures in national and intra-Afghan understanding, and as a result the war-torn country has been more embroiled in protracted wars. With the formation of the caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, a large number of Afghan political actors have once again left the scene and have no role in the current affairs of the country. It is believed that the policy of eliminating and continuing this situation will be a source for the continuation of unrest in the country in the not too distant future.

With the coming to power of the Islamic Emirate, there is a thinking among the rulers that they do not see the need to talk to the political opponents of the Islamic Emirate or at least to involve the nation through consultation on important national issues, while most politicians and observers believe that the continuation of such a situation will increase political and social discontent and will pave the way for more problems and challenges. Therefore, with the beginning of national reconciliation process and negotiations between Afghans, the opportunity to eradicate the war in the country should not be lost. It is also worth mentioning that reconciliation does not mean bringing some corrupt former officials back to government positions, but it does mean taking into account the general demands of the Afghan people and preventing war and insurgency again in the country through reconciliation with political opponents.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is currently in charge of the affairs of the country and as a responsible government it has the responsibility to take a clear step in eradicating the threats to the peace and stability of the country in the near and distant future. This is one of the reasons for the current international community’s interaction with the Taliban-led government and the non-recognition of the new regime in Afghanistan.

On the other hand, one of the current challenges is the brain drain from the country, which is a serious threat to the development and prosperity of the country in the future. One of the causes of this situation is also the possible threats faced by the employees of the previous government, but if the national reconciliation process begins, hopes for the future of the country will increase and this process of brain drain will stop.

As there are now opportunities for national reconciliation to succeed, Afghans urge the Islamic Emirate government that the current opportunity for national reconciliation should not be wasted. Now the war in the country is over and has paved the way for a peaceful understanding. Besides that, some former high ranking officials are present in the country, and by involving them in this process, the chances of this process being successful are higher.

To conclude, there is an urgent need now to start the process of national reconciliation with a clear order from the leadership of the Islamic Emirate, and at least some prominent political figures should be convinced to stop opposing the new government through dialogue and negotiation. This will greatly contribute to the national and international legitimacy of the new government, as well as to the Afghan economy in the short term, through a positive shift in global engagement with the caretaker government in Afghanistan.
