Conclusion and Analysis of the Week
The report shows that all over the country, 381 people have been killed and injured (300 of them were killed and 81 wounded) from 1 – 7 November 2019.
This week, the overall death toll has dropped, but civilian casualties have risen again compared to last week. On the Afghan government’s side, 83 Afghan security forces were killed last week; but this week the number has dropped to 52. The death toll for the anti-government’s armed groups also declined compared to last week. Last week, 295 armed militants were killed, but this week a total of 188 Taliban militants were killed in different parts of the country. On the other side, the death toll for civilians is higher than last week. Last week, the civilian death toll was 39, but this week the number has risen to 60.
According to this week’s report, civilian casualties have increased this week compared to the previous week; however this week, mine blasts have caused civilians casualties, especially children. The deadliest incident took place in Darqad district of Takhar province, where a mine exploded and killed nine children. Generally, the death toll for civilian casualties due to the ongoing war in Afghanistan is high. In this regard, Save The Children international orgnization has also recently expressed concerns over the deaths of children in Afghanistan. According to the UN recent report, 12500 children were killed between the years 2015 and 2018, where 600 of them were killed in roadside bomb blasts.
The Independent Human Rights Commission also said in its latest report that in the first six months of the current year, 6487 civilians were killed, representing an increase of 8 percent over the same period last year. According to the report, in the first six months of the year, 1611 civilians were killed and 4876 others injured, including 576 women and 1634 children.
In general, the fighting parties in Afghanistan don’t care about the civilians’ lives, and most of the civilians casualties are caused because of airstrikes and night raids of Afghan and foreign forces, as well as the explosion of the government’s armed opposition. An entire house was bombarded by Afghan forces and several women and children were killed in Baghlan province this week in order to kill a Taliban leader. Often such attacks completely targets civilians, which this week also killed four civilians in an airstrike on a house of civilians in Sayed Abad district of Maidan Wardak province. Mine explosions on the other hand also cause widespread casualties. Ghazni province officials said in a recent statement that roadside bomb blasts, rocket attacks and car-bomb blasts in residential areas have killed 259 civilians since the beginning of this year. It is said that 72 of them were killed and 178 others were injured.
Qased Strategic Research Center as a war casualties’ monitoring organization in the country urges the fighting parties in the country to pay a serious attention to the civilians’ lives and avoid targeting civilians.
