War Casualties’ Weekly Report (July 26 – August 1, 2019)

Preface                                                                                      

This report covers the casualties of the ongoing war, which have been occurred in different areas of the county during July 26 – August 1, 2019.

Last week’s report shows that the casualties of both sides and civilians were once again high this week compared to the previous week. The deadliest incident for Afghan forces took place in Belcheragh district of Faryab province, where at least 22 ANA soldiers were killed and 7 others wounded. Meanwhile, the deadliest incident for civilians was the explosion on a passenger bus in Farah province, killing at least 34 and injuring 17 others. This week, most of the civilian casualties took place due to airstrikes and bomb explosions.

Going forward through the report, details and exact figures of the casualties’ of the Afghan government forces, anti-government armed militants, civilians, and foreign forces can be found in separate titles.

 

Afghan Forces’ Casualties

July 26:

Three policemen including police commander of the district were killed and five others were injured during a clash between Afghan forces and armed militants in Khogyani district of Ghazni province.

Four policemen were killed during an armed clash between Taliban and Afghan forces in Maiwand district of Kandahar province.

Taliban militants attacked an outpost in Shorabak district of Kandahar province, killing 3 policemen and wounding 5 others.

A policeman was gunned down by Taliban militants in Ghar-Sipyan area of Shuhada district of Badakhshan province.

July 27:

5 policemen were killed and 20 others were injured in a car bomb attack on the district building of Aab-e-Band district of in Ghazni province.

Taliban fighters attacked a security outpost in Kejran district of Daikundi province, killing 10 local policemen and injuring 8 ANA soldiers.

7 local policemen have been killed and 7 others injured in a Taliban attack on a security post in Aibak city, Samangan province.

An ANA soldier was killed and three policemen were injured in a clash between Afghan National Army and Police in Tringot city, the center of Uruzgan province.

A Special Forces soldier has been killed and two others were injured in a roadside bomb blast in the PD1 of Pul-e-Khumri city, Baghlan province.

July 28:

Four policemen were killed and ten others were injured in another car bomb attack in the Aab-e-Band district of Ghazni province.

Taliban attacked security checkpoints in the center of Sar-e-Pul province, killing three local policemen and injuring two others.

22 ANA soldiers, including eight commandos, were killed and seven others were injured in a Taliban attack in Belcheragh district of Faryab province.

Two Afghan soldiers were killed and three local policemen were injured in an armed clash between Taliban and Afghan forces in Qala-e-Zal district of Kunduz province.

In Aliabad district of Kunduz province, Taliban fighters seized a checkpoint of Afghan forces, killing two local policemen and wounding two others.

Four policemen have been killed and seven others injured as a result of an attack on the office of Ghani’s deputy candidate, Amrullah Saleh, for the upcoming elections in Kabul.

July 29:

Four local policemen were killed and two others injured in a Taliban attack in Rabat-e-Sangi district of Herat province.

July 30:

Taliban militants attacked an outpost in Nawabad area near to the center of Kapisa province, killing two policemen and injuring one.

Five ANA soldiers and five policemen were killed and seven ANA soldiers and a policeman were injured during clashes between Taliban and Afghan security forces in Kushk-e-Kohna district of Herat province.

Three Afghan soldiers were killed and two others were injured in clashes with Afghan security forces and Taliban in Dand-e-Ghori area of Pul-e-Khumri, the capital of Baghlan province.

A policeman was killed and two others were injured in clashes between Taliban and Afghan forces in Qumchaq valley of Seya-Gird district of Parwan province.

Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint in Korak area of Daulatar district in Ghor province, killing three policemen.

Two policemen were killed in a Taliban attack on a security post in the capital of Kapisa province, Mahmood Raqi.

Two members of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) have been killed in an attack by unknown militants in the center of Farah province.

July 31:

Two policemen were killed during an operation by Afghan forces in Griezvan and Pashtunkot districts of Faryab province.

Three policemen were killed during an armed clash between Afghan forces and Taliban in Maiwand district of Kandahar province.

Six Afghan soldiers were killed and four others wounded as a result of several land-mine blasts in Balabulok district of Farah province.

Three ANA soldiers and a policeman were killed in Taliban attacks in Nawbahar and Shamulzai districts of Zabul province.

A policeman was killed and seven others were injured in a Taliban attack on a police headquarter in Azra district of Logar province.

Two ANA soldiers and two local policemen were killed and three local policemen were injured in Taliban attacks on security checkpoints in Yangi Qala district of Takhar province.

Two policemen were injured when a bomb exploded near a security post in the PD9 of Kandahar city.

August 1:

Two policemen were killed and three others injured when a bomb exploded in PD15 of Kabul City.

Anti-government Militants’ Casualties

July 26:

11 Taliban militants were killed and four others were injured in clashes between armed militants and Afghan forces in Maiwand district of Kandahar province.

In Shorabak district of Kandahar province, Afghan forces carried out an airstrike on Taliban militants, killing 60 and wounding 30 of them.

July 27:

44 Taliban fighters were killed in a clash between militants and Afghan forces in Jani-Khel district of Paktika province.

July 28:

6 Taliban fighters were killed and 12 others were injured during an armed clash between Afghan forces and Taliban in Ismail-Khel-Mandozi district of Khost province.

At least two militants have been killed in an armed clash between Afghan forces and Taliban in Tarnak-Jaldak district of Zabul province.

July 29:

Afghan security forces carried out an airstrike on Taliban militants in Geru and Khogyani districts of Ghazni province, killing 9 militants and wounding 14 others.

July 30:

17 armed militants have been killed due to a special operation of “01 forces” in Qumchaq valley of Seya-Gird district of Parwan province.

Taliban militants attacked a checkpoint in the Korak area of Dawlatyar district of Ghor province, during which killed two militants and injured three others.

July 31:

At least 35 Taliban militants were killed and 46 others were injured during a joint operation by Afghan forces in Faryab province’s Garizwan and Pashtunkot districts.

13 Taliban fighters were killed and six others were injured in a special operation carried out by Afghan forces in Maiwand district of Kandahar province.

Afghan forces attacked Taliban fighters by an airstrike in Saduzai area of Aab-e-Band district of Ghazni province, killing 18 militants and wounding 5 others. Also, ANA troops attacked the Tasang post in Dehyak district of this province, killing 5 militants and wounding 12 others.

In Andar district of Ghazni province, five armed militants were killed. Also, four armed men were killed and nine were injured in Khogiani district of the province.

August 1:

Air forces attacked a wedding ceremony in the Qaimaqchi area of Kunduz province, in which five Taliban members were killed, along with civilians.

Civilian Casualties

July 27:

A civilian was killed in an armed clash between the Afghan National Army and Police in Tirinkot, the capital of Uruzgan province.

Two civilians were killed including a woman, and 30 others were wounded due to a motorbike bomb explosion in Khost City.

Four civilians were killed in an airstrike in Juwand district of Badghis province.

July 28:

26 people were killed and 43 others injured as a result of a car bomb blast and attack by Taliban militants on the office of (Rawand-e-Sabz) near the Shaheed intersection in PD4 of Kabul city.

Three civilians were killed and 3 others injured due to a roadside bomb explosion on the Kabul-Kandahar highway in PD3 of Ghazni province.

Two civilians were killed during a Taliban attack in Ali-Abad district of Kunduz province.

July 30:

25 civilians, including two children, have been killed in an airstrike by Afghan forces in Seya-Gird district of Parwan province.

Three civilians were killed and 23 others, including children, were injured when a bomb located in a motorbike exploded in Spin-Boldak district of Kandahar province.

A civilian was killed during a Taliban attack in Rabat Sangi district of Herat province.

July 31:

In the Sherzad district of Nangarhar province, foreign forces carried out airstrikes on a high school named Gandomak, killing 6 civilians.

A roadside bomb exploded on a 303 model bus in Farah province’s Aab-e-Khurma area, carrying passengers on the Kandahar-Herat highway, killing 34 people and injuring 17 others.

7 members of a single-family have been killed in a mortar shell blast in Faryab province.

August 1:

Four people, including a child and three women, were killed and three others were injured in an armed clash in Shindand district of Herat province.

Two civilians were killed and three others were injured in firing by Taliban militants following an airstrike on a wedding ceremony in Qaimaqchi area of Kunduz province.

Similarly, 13 civilians were also killed in an airstrike on wedding ceremony in Allahyar area of Juwand district of Badghis province.

Foreign Forces’ Casualties

July 29:

NATO mission in Afghanistan has confirmed in a statement that two US soldiers were killed when an Afghan soldier opened fire on them in Kandahar province.

 

Conclusion and Analysis of the Week

Last week’s report shows that all over the country, 870 people have been killed and injured (492 of them were killed and 378 wounded) from July 26 – August 1, 2019. Worth mentioning that this week the casualties of Afghan forces, anti-government militants and civilians were increased significantly compared to the previous week.

During last week, 66 Afghan soldiers were killed, but this week the figure was doubled, as 121 people were killed. The death toll of Taliban has also doubled compared to the last week. As in last week 114 Taliban fighters were killed, but this week it has been raised to 236 people. Also in last week, the death toll of the civilians was 61 people, but this week it has been more than doubled (133 killed).

This week, also heavy casualties were occurred to the Afghan civilians due to airstrikes by Afghan and foreign forces, and landmines and bomb blasts deployed by Taliban.

According to the recent report of UNAMA, 3810 civilians were killed and wounded in the first six months of this year, which is an increase of 27 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year. UNAMA called the figure shocking and called on both sides to protect the civilian’s life.

Given the bloody situation in the country, QASED Strategic Research Center calls on both sides of the ongoing war to reduce violence alongside the peace talks, especially, stop civilian killings.
