Conclusion and Analysis of the Week
The report shows that all over the country, 853 people have been killed and injured (510 of them were killed and 343 wounded) from 24 January – 6 February 2020.
The overall death toll in the last two weeks has been high; the death toll of the Afghan forces has shown to be higher t in the last two weeks. 30 Afghan security forces were killed in the previous report’s period; however, in the last two weeks, the level has increased significantly and reach 127 Afghan security forces killed. The death toll from the armed opposition of the government has risen as well, with 111 government rebels killed in the previous report’s period, however, in the last week the number was 328; Civilian death rates also show an increase. In the previous report’s period, the number of civilian casualties was 17, but in the past two weeks, the number has increased to 53.
The war between the US and the Taliban has intensified in several provinces, as well as peace efforts. The past two weeks have been the bloodiest week for Afghan forces and civilians. Afghan forces have suffered heavy casualties during Taliban attacks in Kunduz, Baghlan and Faryab provinces. As well as Afghan and foreign forces conducted night raids and attacks on civilian homes in Balkh, Kunduz, Zabul, and Badghis provinces, an airstrike in Balkh killed seven members of a family, including six women and one child. Lal Mohammad, a relative of those killed, said: the planes came, bombed and killed civilians and destroyed rooms. Social media operators have elicited reactions, with reports received from the area and images and videos circulating in the media suggesting that the militants are not present in the area. Locals brought bodies of the dead to Mazar-e Sharif, demanding justice from the government and dozens of protesters in front of the provincial council, criticizing the government, same as in Laghman, Zabul and Badghis provinces where civilians have been killed in airstrikes by Afghan and foreign forces. As mentioned in a statement released by the US Air force, US forces have dropped 7,432 bombs on Afghan soil in the last year. The number is several times higher than it was in the previous years. The Independent Human Rights Commission also released a report regarding civilian casualties, saying that 2019 was a bloody year for civilians, where 10,772 civilians were effected, 2,817 people and killed and 7,955 others injured.
On the other hand, according to Taliban claims, Taliban have dropped four helicopters in these two weeks. Such attacks have raised concerns for some political analysts that the political situation in the world is changing and that the war has reached it peak, and it is likely that Taliban have access to these advanced weapons. If Taliban have access to advanced weapons, the war will be even more bloody.
On the other side, new US demands from Taliban have made the ongoing negotiations for peace difficult. The US does not seem to have any intention of peace in Afghanistan, and by introducing new conditions, it undermines the process and continues its presence.
Qased Strategic Research Center as a war casualties’ monitoring organization in the country emphasizes that the ongoing bloodshed and bloody situation in the country is possible to stop only through the complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and peace with the Taliban. Therefore, we call on international and Afghan stakeholders to focus on peace efforts, rather than focusing on the battlefield.
