Conclusion and Analysis of the Week
The report shows that all over the country, 190 people have been killed or injured (107 of them were killed and 83 wounded) from 29 May – 4 June 2020.
The overall death toll in this week was lower than it was last week, but most of the casualties were civilians. 53 Afghan security personnel were killed last week, but a total of 31 Afghan soldiers were killed this week. The death toll among the anti-government armed militants has also dropped compared to last week. 48 militants were killed last week, but 36 have been killed this week. However, civilian casualties were higher than it was last week. The number of civilians killed last week was 27, but this week the number has risen to 40 (Table-4).
This week, the overall death toll is lower than last week, due to the continuing decline in violence following the Eid al-Fitr ceasefire. Although, casualties were low this week, civilians still suffered heavy casualties. The highest number of civilian casualties was caused by roadside bomb blasts and attacksby Afghan forces on civilian homes. UNAMA said in a statement that roadside bomb blasts in the first 48 hours of June killed ten civilians and injured more than ten others only in Sar-e-Pul and Kunduz provinces.
Despite the reduction in violence on the battlefield, Zalmai Khalilzad, the US special envoy for Afghan peace, said the Afghan government should release 5000 Taliban prisoners before intra-Afghan talks could begin. The Afghan National Security Council (ANSC) said that 2,710 Taliban prisoners have been released so far and stressed that intra-Afghan talks will commence after the release of 3000 prisoners. Sohail Shaheen, a spokesman for the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, said on Twitter that the Afghan government had so far released 2284 Taliban prisoners and Taliban have realsed 420 prisoners. Although the prisoner exchange process accelerated during the Eid holidays, there are differences between the Taliban and the Afghan government over the number of prisoners released. Overall, the speed of this process has raised hopes for the start of intra-Afghan talks.
Qased Strategic Research Center as a war casualties’ monitoring organization in the country emphasizes that the ongoing bloodshed and bloody situation in the country is possible to stop only through the complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and peace with the Taliban. Therefore, we call on international and Afghan stakeholders to focus on peace efforts and to deal with this historical opportunity for peace in Afghanistan responsibly.
