Conclusion and Analysis of the Week
The report shows that all over the country, 225 people have been killed and injured (158 of them were killed and 67 wounded) from 5 – 11 June 2020.
The overall death toll in this week was higher than last week, 31 Afghan security personnel killed last week, but a total of 75 Afghan soldiers were killed this week. The death toll among the anti-government armed militants has also rose from last week. 36 militants were killed last week, but 75 have been killed this week. civilian casualties rate this week is lower than last week. The number of civilians killed last week was 40, but this week the number has dropped to 23 (Table 4).
This week, however, the overall death toll rate is higher than last week. But civilian casualties are lower this week than last. Last week saw the highest number of civilian casualties among the whole casualties. Civilians are the main victims of the ongoing war. The US Agency for International Development (SIGAR) has stated in a recent report that more than 35,500 civilians have been killed in the Afghan war between 2009 – 2019. The agency also released figures on the number of US troops killed in the Afghan war, in which a total of 2,439 US soldiers and personnel were killed and 20,663 others were wounded between 2001 and 2020. In the first three months of this year, seven US soldiers were killed and 11 others wounded, three of them in civilian casualties, the report said.
Meanwhile, Sohail Shaheen, the spokesman for Taliban’s political office in Qatar, wrote on his Twitter account that 107 Afghan forces had been released from Taliban prisons in different provinces this week. In a separate operation, 30 soldiers recently captured in Ghazni province were released in good faith. Sohail Shaheen also said that once the process of the release of the 5,000 prisoners is completed, they are ready to start intra-Afghan talks within a week. The Afghan government announced last week that it had completed the release of 3,000 Taliban prisoners. On the same hand, the head of Taliban’s political office in Qatar, Mullah Baradar, and his delegation also met this week with Zalmai Khalilzad, General Miller and a delegation to discuss speeding up the release of prisoners and starting intra-Afghan talks. It is said that talks are underway between the two sides on the venue and date of intra-Afghan talks and there are hopes that the talks will start soon.
Qased Strategic Research Center as a war casualties’ monitoring organization in the country emphasizes that the ongoing bloodshed and bloody situation in the country is possible to stop only through the complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and peace with the Taliban. Therefore, we call on international and Afghan stakeholders to focus on peace efforts and to deal with this historical opportunity for peace in Afghanistan responsibly.
