Conclusion and Analysis of the Week

The report shows that all over the country, 588 people have been killed and injured (353 of them were killed and 235 wounded) from 12 – 18, June 2020.

The overall death toll in this week was is significantly higher than last week. 60 Afghan security personnel were killed last week but 130 Afghan soldiers have been killed this week. The death toll from anti government militants also rose from last week. 75 militants were killed last week yet 157 militants have been killed this week. Civilian casualties are also higher than last week. The number of civilian casualties last week was 23, but this week the number has risen to 48 (Table 4).

The total number of casualties this week is significantly higher than last week. Civilian casualties in particular were lower last week but higher this week than last. Civilians, however, have suffered heavy casualties in roadside bombings and rocket attacks on civilian homes. The civilian casualties come as the Afghan National Security Council (ANSC) has claimed in a recent report that Taliban have effected 147 civilians in the past week, killing 42 and injuring 105 others. However, Taliban has denied the allegations and blamed Afghan and foreign forces for the civilian casualties.

Meanwhile, the latest report of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said that the number of civilian casualties in the first quarter of this year has increased. UNAMA reports that Taliban and the Afghan government maintained high levels of violence on the ground during the outbreak of the Corona pendamic, leading to widespread civilian casualties.

In addition to civilian casualties and ongoing violence, there are signs of progress in peace talks. Last week, officials from the European section of the Political Office in Qatar held a video conference with Norwegian Special Representative for Afghanistan, Pralbert Alsas, to discuss the current situation in the country and the implementation of the Doha talks. In which, the country of Norway assured support and cooperation in the peace process. The head of the political office in Qatar, Mullah Baradar, also met with Pakistan’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq, in Doha to discuss Afghan peace, among other issues. Meanwhile, 71 Afghan forces have been released from Taliban prisons in different provinces this week. 3,000 prisoners also been released by the Afghan government so far but some sources told Qased that the release of 5,000 Taliban prisoners could be completed in the coming days and intra-Afghan talks could begin.

Qased Strategic Research Center as a war casualties’ monitoring organization in the country emphasizes that the ongoing bloodshed and bloody situation in the country is possible to stop only through the complete withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan and peace with the Taliban. Therefore, we call on international and Afghan stakeholders to focus on peace efforts and to deal with this historical opportunity for peace in Afghanistan responsibly.
